The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
