An defense official has stated that the MoD is currently looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been instructed to avoid talking about classified matters in all vehicles.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret material while travelling in Chinese cars.
The minister stated that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any kind of car, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Security Background
This announcement follows reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This broader defence environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of official operations, including transport use to communication habits.
