Whenever a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
