Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
